Stark comparison

My husband’s first comment was “that’s just how they built buildings during that time” and my response was “no, that is how they built institutional buildings at that time”. The schools were never meant to cherish and nurture the growth of children. They were meant to institutionalize innocent spirits just like a prison does. The message is clear, but the observations of others may require an explanation. That makes this sweatshirt a perfect conversation starter for allies like me. I love it.

The Stony Mountain Penitentiary and Elkhorn Residential School, both in Manitoba, mark significant chapters in Canadian history. While differing in their foundation—Stony Mountain, a correctional facility established in 1877, symbolized the government's control over resistors, especially Indigenous communities; Elkhorn, part of a larger system in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, aimed to forcibly assimilate Indigenous children, stripping them of their culture.
