Turtle Island is a term used by Indigenous peoples to describe North America.
According to the creation stories, the continent was first formed by the Muskrat who brought mud from the bottom of the ocean, which grew into land on the back of the Turtle.
The Turtle is a sacred animal to many Indigenous communities and represents strength, perseverance, and wisdom.
The term Turtle Island is a reminder of the rich cultures and histories that existed on this land long before European colonization and highlights the ongoing importance of Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination.
