Design Story:

Inside the letters features a young Leonard Peltier. Leonard Peltier was a bold and resilient Indigenous activist and member of the American Indian Movement. Born in North Dakota in 1944, Peltier grew up amid poverty and discrimination against Indigenous peoples, which fueled his passion for social justice. He became involved with AIM in the 1970s and quickly rose to prominence as a leader in the organization's fight for Indigenous rights, self-determination, and to end police brutality against Native communities.

Despite being wrongfully convicted of killing two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975, Peltier remained authentic and socially-conscious in his efforts to raise awareness about the experiences of urban Indigenous individuals and communities. He spent over four decades in prison, becoming a symbol of resilience and strength in the face of systemic injustice. Even while incarcerated, Peltier remained committed to highlighting the importance of cultural preservation and advocating for social justice. Through his life, Peltier celebrated Indigenous cultures’ beauty and resilience, personifying the values that Red Rebel Armour encompasses.
